Going to Our First Play

On Saturday evening, we went a pub, called "Hannibal's" for dinner.  The previous Saturday, we had eaten on the veranda right above it, and had seen many families enjoying meals there.  Luckily, Spring Break had started on Friday evening, and many people had headed out of town.  That made "Hannibal's" a perfect place for a quick bite before heading to the theatre.

I had thoroughly checked the menu that afternoon, and had seen what the most popular dishes were.  Rich hadn't done that.  I ordered a hamburger that came with carmelised onions, fries, and a salad.
We were also introduced to a condiment called "Maggi Chilli Sauce".  It tastes like the sauce in which you would cook appetizer meatballs.  It's a new "must-have food item"!  Rich ordered linguine with mushrooms and sausage.  He didn't realize that it didn't come with tomato sauce.  My dinner won, but I was nice and I shared.  That was good, too, as we didn't have to bring leftovers back to the apartment before heading to the play.

After dinner, we headed to the "Singapore Repertory Theatre".  We headed around the corner, back through the doors from which I had bought the tickets.  After we entered the theatre, we realized that we could have entered from doors that opened into the restaurant area where we had eaten.  Now we know!

As we waited for the doors to open, (10 minutes before showtime!), we wandered through the halls, looking at posters of past productions.  There had been some great plays staged at this theatre!  Kevin Spacey had appeared as "Richard III", directed by Sam Mendes.  Pretty impressive!

The play was called "Venus in Furs".  It was about the illusion that men have about being in charge in a relationship.  It had just closed on Broadway.  There were only 2 actors in it.  The woman was played by Stephanie Lee.  She had just come from playing "Mary Poppins" on Broadway.  Boy, was this part different!!!  The man was played by Anson Mount.  He's been in lots of plays, movies, and tv shows.   The theatre was not very large, probably only 1/3 the size of the "Paramount" in Aurora, or 1/6 the size of the "Chicago Theatre".  It was amazing that they could get that type of talent here.  Plus, the tickets were quite reasonable.  2 tickets cost me less than I had paid for one at recent trips to "Broadway in Chicago".  Maybe it was because there were only 2 actors, no set changes, etc.  Anyway, it was quite an enjoyable evening.  We're already looking into seeing the next performance that is staged here!
